Not entirely true. Arya’s story in season 5 has been left half completed when compared to the books and Sam’s trip has barely begun. Bran’s story hasn’t been touched nor has any of his training he goes through and the Greyjoy’s story, while largely left untouched, has to be even introduced if it’s to line up with what happens in the books.

That’s a drag if it’s true, One of the fun things about Marvel comics are street level characters occasionally have to deal with things outside of their genre. Jessica Jones, as grounded as it is, still happens in a city coping with a fairly recent alien attack. It doesn’t dominate the story but it adds a layer that makes it unique.

It was very smart of them to wait until after Jessica Jones to reveal this.

Daredevil and Jessica Jones got a big push by being expected to tie into the MCU.
Now that viewers are hooked, and we’re halfway through the first seasons, they can detach it from the MCU and stiil have viewers interested in Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. most likely doesn’t encounter the same issues as the Netflix shows because ABC, like Marvel, is an arm of the Disney conglomerate. That’s also why we can get shows like Peggy Carter.

Wow guys … this piece is pretty speculative and not based on much fact. I’ll also add that the Netflix shows DO reference the movies and are productions of ABC Studios. If anything, I’m pretty sure that Marvel TV will try NOT to get in the way of the Marvel MCU. (So you won’t have that Suicide Squad situation that went down with DC on Arrow.)

I’m glad. I don’t want to see my ‘street level’ heroes in the movies, because other than Captain America, I don’t watch any of the other films.

The funny thing about Supergirl is that I still see it being heralded as a breakout success by critics. I don’t disagree, but it’s interesting to see that a CBS show that pulls less than 10 million is heralded as such whereas a show in the same position in 2007 would have been quickly edging towards cancellation.

I’ve had a lot of fun with Supergirl so far. I think the writing is still trite at times, and it overexplains and reiterates points in a way that only network series do, but overall it’s been an enjoyable ride.

I guess it’s a sign of my age, but this is pretty much the only superhero tv show I watch. I appreciate that they’ve gone the opposite direction of the other shows by remaining bright and sunny for the most part (matched by the cinematography). At times the individual stories and villains can come off a bit pedestrian, but the show has a lot of heart and there’s always a scene or two that really hits it out of the ballpark emotionally. The show has a likable lead and supporting cast and I like the way they’ve softened Cat Grant and made her a bit more complex, rather than just made her a hardass boss. The series’ love triangle(s) also makes it work. And they’ve done a good job of including some interesting subplots that will likely pay off later down the line. With most of the other shows trying to be dark and gritty, I think this show is a breath of fresh air; it’s got more of a YA feel.

I’ve never read the books, but I was looking at Snow’s death and thinking they’d bring him back. There were way too many dangling plotlines to kill him off like that. With the White Walkers especially.

Does this show have the R-rated language of the “Alias” comic book?

I’m surprised by the seeming lack of interest in this show on several comics-related sites. Very few comments posted.

But maybe I shouldn’t be surprised. If the characters wore spandex, masks and capes, there would probably be more interest. Cinephile (film buff) sites seem to be more enthusiastic about “Jessica Jones.”

I respectfully disagree that this is a step down from Daredevil. I think this show has improved on all the shortcomings Daredevil had. And I truly adored Daredevil.

Agreed with Erik, while this show doesn’t have the same level of kinetic energy as DD, nor the same amount of opportunities to provide some truly great geek-out moments, I think Jessica Jones is a stronger series thus far. I just finished episode seven myself and am excited to see how this all plays out. It’s extremely intense and well-crafted.

Fair enough. In the comparison between the two, I just think Jessica Jones’ lows are much lower than Daredevil’s, which felt like a more consistent ride throughout. I just can’t muster much interest in the Trish Walker, Jeryn Hogarth, or neighbor plotlines. But YMMV as always.

I agree the show was a step down from Daredevil. I really just think that Jessica Jones doesn’t work in a newly forming MCU, it lost a lot of the charm of the source material while still managing capture the characters really well. I loved that Jeryn was played so strongly.

I didn’t like how it cut corners to ratchet the tension. In the source material Purple Man never raped Jessica, the scars were all from intense and well constructed mind games. The show took the easy route over and over, without making anything actually deeply dark. Implied drug abuse, etc… the show felt overly lazy to me. I was disappointed.

There were tons of tiny things to enjoy. I found the Patsy story well constructed, if badly acted and Luke Cage’s first fight scene was amazing. I don’t think anything in the show will bring me back for more.

I mostly agree with the pros and cons you listed. I don’t personally think the show is a step down from Daredevil. While I enjoyed both shows, I think the shows were different enough that it makes them difficult to compare fairly. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of similarities to Daredevil, but I think Jessica Jones trades out a lot of comic fantasia and action in favor of exploring realistic people and drama. For example, you see the life of normal down-trodden citizens making reference to the “god-like” Avengers, there is the social fall out and how it affects people like Jessica and Luke, you see deep exploration of psychological problems like what Kilgrave did to Jessica. A lot of this minutia is ignored in comic book shows, even Daredevil to some degree.

Chaos McKenzie hits most of the issues I have taken with this show. Too many corners were cut from the source material. I understand why they had to do it in order to shoe horn it into the universe they are building, but with tropes galore and cliche after cliche I find myself less and less willing to forgive.

DareDevil going its own way didn’t seem like a betrayal of the cannon since it has decades of plots and characters to draw upon. (still hate that they killed Ben Urich) But Jessica Jones has approximately two mini-series worth of plot; they could have been slightly more faithful to some of the major plot points.

Before this turns into a full blown rant that makes me look like (more of) a lunatic fan boy, I would just like to say that the removal of the language from ALIAS really cramps the flow of the characters. It’s on Netflix. It’s rated TV-MA. Don’t be afraid to use the word fuck or cunt. Marvel wasn’t when it was in print, they shouldn’t in film. Not everything if for kids. The way this show is done is already not child friendly, so pulling the profanity punches is a weak move that serves nothing.

All in all I’m very disappointed. I had such high hopes after DD, and found this follow up extremely wanting. I fear Cage will follow this more than DD and also be a big let down. Ah well.

I loved it.
Loved Kristyn Ritter as Jessica (and I have to admit, I was on the fence when she was first cast). She eased my fears and made me a fan.
Trish “Patsy” Walker was a great character. Her backstory was kind of interesting, and I found myself really rooting for her during the series.
Anytime Jessica and Luke Cage were on screen, the show was just that much better. The chemistry between the two was perfect, and I am now even more pumped for the Luke Cage series, so we can dig into his life a little.
Hogarth was a queen B. I wanted to hate her so many times, but she was also so damn compelling to watch, I wanted to see what she would do next. Crazy shit going on there.
NUKE!!!! I didn’t like the character of Officer Simpson, and honestly felt his storyline was the weakest part of the show…but that’s just my opinion.
I found myself digging ‘crazy neighbor girl’. She had a lot of issues, but again, fun to watch.
I liked how Jessica and Luke’s relationship ended on a completely different note than the comic, and some of the other surprises.
I feel that Killgrave could have been much more menacing if he was played by someone other than Tennant. But everyone seems to love him in this role, so what do I know..?

All in all I bitched through all 13 episodes in two days. Had a ball watching some of my favorite characters come to life, and hope there is a Season 2 to explore those issues brought up towards the end of the series (Trish’s mom, IGN, etc).

This is a step way up from Daredevil. And Daredevil was solid. The characters in this have depth and the plot twists were truly shocking.

M girlfriend and I are all caught up on both shows. Her parents are only caught up on THE FLASH. I foresee another evening of headaches, phone calls, and 20 questions, because they refuse to catch up on ARROW.

Yeah… I read those issues with the baseball bat. At this point *a certain character* would be better off where they *presumably* are now.

I’ve read comics my whole life. I love DC Comics in particular. I have a strong affinity for Silver-Age to Pre-New52 DC comics. I love almost every DC character.

While we’re discussing the Hero’s Journey, realize that it doesn’t apply here… There is no way for the hero to return to Krypton. The hero COMES from a world of supernatural wonder into the everyday.

Instead, we get the American Monomyth:

Jimmy Olsen is the mentor figure. I’m hoping he doesn’t become the Magical Negro.
Kara, on the other hand, IS Jimmy Olsen. She’s the gofer at work, the New Adult. Which is intriguing, in that the Superman/Jimmy paradigm is flipped… Here he knows everything, and Kara has to bumble her way around things. (Yes, I’m hoping for some Red K stories. Or some fun BEMs!)

I’m also hoping that “Katty Perry” becomes more dimensional. I like how Kat Grant has been transformed from a debutante to a driven CEO, but I’m also hoping there’s some exploration of her backstory.

(HA! What if Kara = “Murphy Brown’s secretaries”? Who had the job before her? Any disgruntled employees?)

Yes, this show will skew younger… it’s 8 Eastern, 7 Central, the first hour of prime time. On Monday, which traditionally is for CBS what Thursday was to NBC. But now, instead of sitcoms, we get Supergirl, Scorpion, and NCIS:LA.

The big unknown: the Big S. Superman exists, but can’t appear in these episodes, because, anytime Superman shows up in a story, the story becomes a Superman story. But what about Lex? The DEO? Star Labs? Other heroes which appear because of Superman? That’s why Jimmy Olsen is here… he’s the narrative sock puppet for Superman, as we saw when he handed her the cape.

The BIG QUESTION: what parts of the DCU can the writers of Supergirl use, and which belong to the Arrowverse? Does CBS just get the Superman Family? Or does that also include aliens and outer space?

OOOOOooooohhhh… “Legion of Superheroes”! Replace Superboy with Supergirl. Watch those background characters, viewers! They might be aliens! (Were I a story editor, I’d set that up for perhaps the second season cliffhanger. Use that as a backdoor pilot for Legion.)

It looked to me like they almost tried to make the show as dull as possible. Supergirl insecure? Who wants that? I’ll give it 2 more episodes. I did notice that she mentioned Wicked tickets. CBS must own stock in the musical.

A friend of mine has two younger children, one boy and one girl, ages 7 and 10, who have just within the last year been exposed to superheroes of any kind. They both loved the pilot and can’t wait for more, and my friend feels the subject matter in the FLash and Arrow can be too complicated/mature for them. I think as hardcore fans, we can sometimes get caught up in the egocentric idea of everything being targeted towards us, when honestly that just doesn’t have to be the case. I’m not currently reading Batgirl, for instance, but I think it’s an important book that needs to exist for the audience it is being written for.

I thought this pilot was even more fun than the pilot for The Flash, and more earnest without having quite the level of campiness of say a Lois and Clark, or the emo-ness of Smallville, which is perfect for the audience I think it is going for. I’m excited to see that the overnight ratings for this show have been so good as it may prove that the audience they are courting for these superhero shows need not all be the same, and there is quite a bit of opportunity to open the fan base for these things way wider.

The young women I know (women in their 20s) refer to themselves as “girls,” and don’t mind anyone else calling them girls. They don’t find it belittling. It’s a generational change, I guess.

I probably won’t watch this show until the first season is released on DVD, but I’m glad it breaks with the dark and gloomy style of DC’s movies. I’m glad female superhero fans have someone to root for. However, the “Supergirl” trailers DO look a lot like SNL’s “Black Widow” parody trailer.

Power Girl. You know she’ll show up for ratings week. I hope they don’t wimp out by making her PC. Look at cosplayer BelleChere for an idea what the tv Power Girl should look like.

This doesn’t necessarily have to be true, there are plenty of ways to include him and still celebrate Supergirl as the show runner (and if somebody wants to pay me I’d share those ideas). However I think including him would be a mistake since the impetus of action seems to be in Kara finding out how to ‘hero’ her way. (This is of course a bit of a sticky widget, since she is a derivative character) Unfortunately that is the primary reason I dislike the inclusion of Jimmy Olsen (I am not talking about changing the traditional aesthetic representation, only the character as plot device). Mechad Brooks turns out a fine performance, and his characterization would be more pleasing if he was an entirely new character, rather than the device to pull in hack-kneed ‘Super-mythos’ references.
Overall I to found the show watchable, and hope that the stories will become more engaging, but defining itself independently of the ‘Big Red S’ and overcoming the history of “prime-time” programming may take more than ‘a single bound’.

As an educated, socially-aware white male, I completely agree with the views in this essay. There is a strain of toxic representation that goes back to the first season, when they chose to name the black male T-Dog, as if Blackness is only recognizable according to our ideas of urban culture. Or what about the introduction of Michonne as a sword-wielding, magical negress whose duty is to protect the white woman? Or later, when she is a bargaining chip in a power struggle between a while male named The Governor and a white male southern deputy? The writers have since expanded upon her character, but let’s consider this:

In the comic, her beef with the Governor comes from being brutally raped and beaten by him. In the television show, that dynamic is replaced by the the mere threat of rape against a white woman.

And he’s right about accurate representation: statistically, there would be more black survivors than white. Replace Rick and Daryl with black men, then replace Bob, Noah, etc with white men… nevermind, you probably wouldn’t be watching show with a mostly black cast, would you.

Thaddeus Howze is unequivocally on point in his reading of the show. If you disagree, ask yourself: am I white? Then you’re already approaching it wrong.

There was a time when if you didn’t like something, you didn’t listen to/read/watch it. If there was a line crossed, you could boycott, write letters, or protest it in some form. Now if you don’t feel “represented” you go to social media and demand that changes be made because you personally don’t like it. I feel that there is way too much of that going on involving entertainment these days.

As a White Brit, it seems like race is projected onto everything in the US – and from outside looking in (and have been to the US) I understand why… but I really don’t see it here other than perhaps in trying to break stereo types – where else is there a Carol in TV or film?

I always find you can test the validity of a theory by reversing it – so lets do that. Why not ask “what would the walking dead look like if a bunch of white red neck republicans were writing the script”? Could the shows version of Tyrese exist in _their_ mind? A black male who risks everything to protect someone else’s baby, but is naturally non-violent and the most moral character in the show? No – I can’t see that at all. Would the main moral voice of the show come from the black/non-white male characters in the show (post Dale being bitten) – i.e. Glenn and Tyrese?

Would Bob be their go to depicition of a black male, or Morgan or Gabriel or Noah? These are so non-stereo-typical, which makes them interesting and actually real – if not a statistically representative slice of a demographic. What about Sasha and Michonne as that of black women?

What if Rick was black? In his descent to animalism, biting out the neck of an assailant or executing Pete would people be projecting race onto this too? Would Rick be the black male without a moral compass that middle class white republicans fear when walking home at night? Maybe there is racism at play here – maybe the show is sensitive to creating a black male stereotype – i.e. gun welding amoral thug. Maybe…

These are interesting questions…. and I don’t claim to know the answer. But I do feel that race gets projected onto everything in a way that makes it paradoxically impossible not to be racist unless you are actually racist. By that I mean, if you spend the entire time when writing a story trying to consider what is racially representative – that is, in itself, racist by definition. This is a story about people who happen to have a certain gender or race or sexual persuassion. The world is, by definition, full of deviation from the mean events, otherwise its a highly contrived story.

We all know that TV programmes are aimed at what they think is their demographic – which in this case was originally presumably the comic book crowd – which I perceive to be white male nerds/geeks. It’s a pity that they couldn’t have made another core character black at the start – I think it couldn’t be Rick for reasons I stated above so Daryl maybe would be obvious since he wasn’t in the comics (but then, would Merle have been an example of a negative black character? Indeed would Daryll from where he started from).

I do agree that so far in the series, we haven’t seen strong black _male_ leadership. We now have it in Morgan – a bad ass as well as the new moral compass of the group. I do know that I have really enjoyed watching Bob, Noah and Tyrese and I wish they were still in the programme – particularly Tyrese. I’m a father of 3 young kids and if I was leaving my kids with someone – it wouldn’t be Rick or Glenn or Dayrll or Michonne and definitely NOT Carol – it would be Tyrese. I think killing him off was the show’s one big mistake.

I don’t see any “demands” here. Instead, I see a profoundly honest description of what Mr. Howze finds offensive on a television show he wanted to like.

If you don’t wish to consider his point of view, that is your privilege. No one is taking away your WALKING DEAD.

For myself, I stopped watching last season, when I thought the stories (and characters) became too repetitive. These included racial stereotypes, but much more so gender stereotypes, and all sorts of other things that, quite frankly, were boring.

As a black woman who’s actually an avid fan of the show I will say this. You certainly have your strong points about the lack of screen time given to black men on the show. This is actually something I’ve pointed out myself plenty of times but as much as I support alot of what your saying I will have to say this in the show’s defense.

Many of the gripes you have about the show’s depiction of black men is actually coming off as a lot of over-reading and outlandish reaching. Tyrese was possibly one of the most beloved and greatly acted characters on the show. Yes, even I had to call BS on Rick’s takedown of him back in season 3, but I attribute that to Rick’s shield of being the main character. Also, here’s the positive of his character that you left out in your negative rant. I was actually relieved to see a black male character who showed a deeply caring, nurturing, and protective role for children, especially children who weren’t his, which contrasts completely with the image the media likes to portray of “the deadbeat black daddy” stereotype. It was really refreshing to see that. Did I think they made him soft? Yes, but can you actually say that it would have looked great for a big, hulking black man to have been the one to shoot down a little white girl on national TV? Even if the show went out of its way to depict he would have been justified in doing so? Tyrese was a far cry from his comic book counterpart but I don’t think that made his TV character weak or spineless and his death was truly heartbreaking and sad.

T-Dog’s characterization was weak but even he had his shining moments. Such as his famous rant about how he was very aware that black men like him didn’t last in scenarios such as the show’s setting and when he was revealed to be a man of faith enough to sacrifice himself for Carol. In regards to Bob, honestly I didn’t care for this character, but I wouldn’t have cared for him, no matter what race he was. As for Father Gabriel, another character I don’t care for, but the show does seem to be setting him up for a great redemption arc, only time will tell however.

In regards to Morgan, I like his characterization in the show better than the comic where he was just a raving lunatic that was hooking up with Michonne. Is his pacifism becoming frustrating? Yes, but I think he’s being set up as a foil to Rick who at this point is killing Willy nilly and nowhere near the individual he started out on the show to be. At the end of the day, almost every demographic had a gripe about the show. Like how earlier in the series feminist complained about how all the white female characters were useless and nothing more than eye candy. How a religious character like Hershel was stubborn to the point of stupidity in his initial introduction. My BF, who is Hispanic, often points out that at least black women and men are getting screen time. There hasn’t been a strong representation of any Hispanic males in the entire shows run. At least one that wasn’t villainous or disappeared after their intro. The list can go on.

I still like the show and I know plenty of people of color who still do and still like the very characters you bashed. I highly doubt the writers on the show are going out of their way to offend anyone and just want to do a good show. I respect your perspective, and hopefully your respect my points as well.

I’m sorry if I offend anyone, but I am so sick and tired of everything being racist! Enough is enough. It seems to me that there are way too many people in this country who look for racism in everything. Racism does exist but its not one sided. There are racists of every culture and race. I can point out hundreds of racist rap songs and black movies and TV shows. In fact in today’s day and age it is a handicap to be white. I see past skin color and believe we are all of one race, the human race. I am so tired of people in this country trying to keep us divided. Get over it!
