3. Is Marvel’s Relaunch Stumbling Out of the Gate?

ironman3The November sales estimate headlines are all about how the market is up, owing to Dark Knight 3, Vader Down and a metric ton of Marvel’s relaunched #1’s. You expect a certain amount of that. Stunts sell, as long as the publishers don’t over-extend the market for variant covers (and they sure seem aggressive in emphasizing those instead of the content in between the covers). What you’d miss out on if you only read the headlines is that Marvel’s #2 and #3 issues aren’t getting a ton of traction relative to those gaudy #1 sales totals.

5. Marvel to Give Away Free Hip Hop Cover Compilation Comic

30HIPHOP-master675Marvel Comics’ All-New All-Different relaunch is off to a rousing success, with their new series #1s debuting at enormous sales levels thanks in no small part to the presence of variants, including the Hip Hop covers that mashup heroes like Ant-Man with classic album covers such as that of Notorious BIG’s Ready to Die.  To celebrate […]

6. A Month Of Venturing Into the All-New, All-Different Marvel Universe: Recapping Week One

The weirdest thing happened in Marvel last week. The publisher’s landmark Secret Wars event has been delayed repeatedly, but Marvel is moving ahead as scheduled with their full line relauch, giving birth to the All-New, All-Different Marvel Universe. We at Comics Beat are dedicated to praising great comics, and with so many potential winners out there it […]

7. Another Two Bite the Dust, “Sensation Comics” and “Batman ’66” are Cancelled; “Green Lantern: the Lost Army” Missing from Solicits, has the “Circle of Trust” been Broken?

Looks like bad news comes in droves.  Hot on the heels of DC’s announcement that Omega Men, Doomed, and three other series have been cancelled, DC solicited the final issues of Digital First titles Batman ’66 and Sensation Comics featuring Wonder Woman.  Both of these series will conclude in December, with Batman ’66 making it to a healthy 30 issues and Sensation […]

9. Mini-Feature: Oh, Theodore! Guinea Pig Poems

OK, I swear I double-checked to make sure this title was not yet nominated for a Cybils. That's my goal, to spread the word about some un-nominated poetry collections in the hopes that people will check out the books and someone will like them enough to nominate them.

I suppose I was predisposed to enjoy Oh, Theodore! Guinea Pig Poems (by Susan Katz, illustrated by Stacey Schuett, Clarion, 2007) because we have a guinea pig.

Here's our very own Muffin, being fed yogurt (which she loves) when she had a slight illness.

But I think I would have liked it anyway. This is a collection of free verse poems for very young kids. That's not very common. Most poetry for preschool and primary grade kids is rhythmic and rhyming. That's fine--they love rhythm and rhyme! But it's also great for kids to see that not all poetry has to rhyme. It makes poetry much less intimidating for them when they want to try writing their own. And it saves us all from countless poems about the power of the flower, etc. It's one of the things I love about Kristine O'Connell George's Little Dog Poems and Little Dog and Duncan, too.

So this collection of poems is about a boy who gets a pet guinea pig, Theodore. Theodore is shy, and the poems follow the building-up of trust and affection between boy and pig. It's so cute! It made me laugh out loud in several places, especially poems that focus on how noisy guinea pigs are (it's true!). Theodore also gets loose, which adds some tension to the story arc.

Here's just one poem I really like:

Theo-Door

Open
the kitchen door.
Theodore sits.

Open
the cupboard door.
Theodore sits.

But open
the refrigerator door.
Here comes Theodore!

And here's one more:

New Home

Theodore loves
the grocery bag.
He travels inside it
across the floor,
a turtle with
a brown paper shell.

Share this book with a young pet-lover in your house or classroom. And if you love the book, please consider nominating it for a Cybils.
