1. Trip Blip - Bremerton, WA

Bremerton is a surprisingly fun stop.  We were out camping on the Olympic Peninsula this weekend and decided to take a ferry home from Bremerton.  We were having so much fun near the ferry terminal that we switched to the next ferry to give us another hour and a half to explore.

The Harborside Fountain Park (bottom center and left center) is filled with giant, spouting fountains and very fun to walk around and explore.  Lots of kids there were in full swim mode a very refreshingly wet.

Along the boardwalk we happened upon a Sunday Farmer's market. E protested (aka a bit of a tantrum) about how boring it was and how he hated markets - this is just at first glance.  After moping through he cheered a bit with a balloon sword.

There is lots of Aquatic and Navy art to check out and I'd still be there taking pictures if I tried to capture it all.

We enjoyed watching the ships of all kinds, including giant Navy Destroyers, Aircraft Carriers, ferries and Aircraft Carriers.  There is a historic Naval Destroyer called the U.S.S. Turner Joy that has been turned into a museum, but we didn't have time for that (note there is an entrance fee).

Our favourite thing was the (free) Puget Sound Navy Museum in fact we literally had to run out the door and down the dock to catch our ferry and so didn't see everything...

2. Clyde Beach

Isn't there something amazingly summery about swimming in a lake?  Maybe it's the Rocky Mountain Canada girl in me.  If you were going to swim in a lake where I grew up it better be smokin' hot on shore, or you would be in danger of hypothermia!
Luckily the lakes around here are refreshingly cool and Lake Washington itself has some great family beaches.  This is a favourite in Bellevue, Clyde Beach. Great grassy hill, fun "pirate" playground, a dock, roped off swimming area for the little ones and even a lifeguard!!!

3. Build an Airport

Did you know a 2-litre soda bottle makes a great air traffic control tower? A covered cereal box is a great airport building. Parking paper airplanes was a problem.  The boys came up with raised blocks to set them on as they arrive and depart.  Making and flying paper planes is so much fun, and adding an airport adds to the fun!

4. SAM - Seattle Art Museum, Alexander Calder and Free First Thursday...

The Seattle Art Museum (SAM) is one of those things that is great about living in the city, but as a mom of active boys I've shied away.

Today, I guess I was feeling brave, the formula seemed right. Free Admission (every first Thursday) + Alexander Calder Exhibit + half-day Kindergarten + needing a little something different.

I thought the hammering man missing his arm was a sign we would fit in well today, then we found street parking within a block! It was a New Year's miracle.

The trip was a big success. After an initial meltdown reaction to the "Please do not touch" signs everywhere, C settled in to a sulk temporarily until he couldn't help but appreciate some things around him.

Floating shapes and colours balancing, the Calder exhibit also has a kids activity guide with assignments for each gallery room like, "How many footsteps does it take to walk around this sculpture?"

Somehow balance becomes beautiful.

E thought everything he saw was "amazing" and "beautiful." From spiky armour to the Calder circus film.
This is a "Living Room" It had a great view for me to day-dream, where the boys could "create" with blocks behind me.This was E's favourite installation with real cars, right at the ticket entrance.
In the end C agreed he liked it, with reluctance, and the cavet, "It wasn't fun, but it was interesting."

6. Ferry Boats

"Crowds of men and women attired in the usual costumes!
how curious you are to me!
On the ferry-boats, the hundreds and hundreds that cross,
returning home,
are more curious to me than you suppose..."
Crossing Brooklyn Ferry
by Walt Whitman (lines 3-4)

A ferry ride is always great entertainment, rain or shine.

8. Gold Rush

For some more exploring we took a little field trip in Seattle. On the northwest corner of Jackson Street and Second Avenue is a small National Park with big opportunities for little explorers to experience the Gold Rush northbound and great news - no entrance fees!

Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park

It was fun to learn about gold, what it is used for and how much we were each worth our weight in gold, let's just say I am very valuable.

This park is also part of the Junior Ranger Program and they have a little passport you can buy for $0.50 and do brass rubbings and embossing stations around the displays.

You can spin the wheel of fortune and see if you would have been one of the few who struck it rich.
Stop at the outfitters store for everything you need on your adventure...

Coming up they are having Junior Ranger Day, April 24th. 10am - 4pm. FREE!

Kids get to pan for real gold, make sourdough and watch it grow, participate in the Art Notebook Project. Complete the Junior Ranger activities book that day and earn commemorative Junior Ranger badges, patches or pins.
